~ Nez Perce Healing Conferences ~

In 2002, on the 125th anniversary of the Nez Perce Conflict of 1877, The Historical Museum at St. Gertrude, in cooperation with the Nez Perce Tribe and the National Park Service, was proud to host a one-day event entitled “Nez Perce Country: A Symposium”. That symposium focused on the land and how it has been transformed over the last 300 years.

A second follow-up event, now termed a “forum”, took place on Thursday, June 12, 2003 at Kamiah High School in Kamiah, Idaho. The theme of the forum was “Living Together Into the Future”. The major intent of the forum remains to bring cultures together for a day of positive interaction.

By sharing, interacting and communicating, the participants have an opportunity to come to a better understanding of each other and each other’s culture. It is a time to overcome some of the misunderstandings and misrepresentations within each culture and, hopefully, a time to continue healing the trauma of the past.

In 2004 the Forum focused on rebuilding our communities and working together for our common good.

Our communities are in transition. How do we share the land, the water, the air? How do we use the land and its people for everyone's benefit? What are some tools for affecting change? How can our diversity be our strength? How can we enhance communication? How do we rebuild the "front porch" in our communities?

The third annual forum hoped to help build bridges between cultures.
